Should I paint my walls or sand my floors first?

If you're planning a home renovation, one of the dilemmas you may face is deciding whether to paint your walls or sand your floors first. While there's no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, we'll discuss the benefits of painting your walls first and why it might be the right choice for your project.

Our Advice: Paint your walls first

At Pittwater Eco, we recommend painting your walls first. Even with careful prep work, painting can still be a messy job, and there's always the risk of paint dripping onto your floorboards. As floor sanding is more expensive than painting, it's best to complete any major painting jobs before we start sanding the floors.

Here’s 4 benefits of painting your walls first:

  1. You can worry less about paint clean up. If you do spill paint on your flooring before you start sanding, this isn’t an issue as it gets sanded off.

  2. You can avoid scratching your polished floorboards from further renovations/painting, for example marks from ladders.

  3. Create a more cohesive design. Once you’ve chosen your wall colours we can help to choose a floor stain and finish which will complement them, making your spaces feel more cohesive.

  4. It’s easy to still touch up walls at the end. If by any chance your walls get scratched during the floor sanding, you can always (carefully) touch it up once the floor is finished.

Paint Walls Before Sanding Floors

Will floor sanding make my walls dusty?

Traditionally, floor sanding is a messy job that can coat your walls with dust. However, at Pittwater Eco, we prioritise keeping your home as clean and livable as possible throughout the sanding process. If you do find any fine dust after we finish sanding, we recommend using a vacuum with a hose attachment or a dry cloth to remove any remaining residue.

Do what’s best for you

While painting walls first is generally recommended, there may be situations where sanding floors before painting is necessary - factors such as the size of your space, time constraints, and the condition of the room can influence this.

Regardless of the order, our team at Pittwater Eco Floor Sanding will work with your schedule and provide guidance on protecting your floors if you decide to paint afterwards.
