Deck Sanding and Timber Deck Restoration Sydney

Deck Sanding and Timber Deck Restoration and Repairs with Pittwater Eco Floor Sanding

Looking For deck sanding or timber deck restoration services?

Pittwater Eco Floor Sanding has been working with outdoor timber decks across Sydney and the Northern Beaches since 2012 so know the right products to apply for the environment the deck is in.

Outdoor timber requires expert knowledge to get it right the first time. If, as in many cases, the wrong product is applied initially, outdoor timber may need complete sanding or stripping to bring it back to its raw condition.

An appropriate professional product suitable for an Australian environment should then be applied. For the best possible performance, it should then be maintained yearly either by the homeowner or by a professional, by washing and re-coating.

Decking around swimming pools, high exposure to the elements, or damp areas may require extra care.

Although we don’t offer a complete deck building service, we do relay an existing deck, often removing all existing board to replace with new decking boards, over the existing structural timber.

Timber Deck Restoration Process

In this process, we would remove all nails or screws, and then remove the old decking boards. We would then ensure that the structural timbers are level and sound, and remedy any issues before continuing.

Timber deck restoration – laying the new timber deck

Once we begin laying the new boards, the process can be quite fast. We use spacers to ensure even, uniform gaps the whole way through, depending on the width of the boards, minimum 4mm. The boards are fastened to the joists using our recommended stainless steel decking screws. These are much more expensive screws than any other type, however, they will outlast all other screws and save you time and money in the long run. We countersink each screw so that they sit below the surface of the board, to allow for deck sanding if necessary in the future, to minimise screws sitting above the board unsafely, and to create a neat finish.

Deck Sanding is not required with new decking boards

With new decking boards, deck sanding is not required, so we would then coat the deck with the chosen finish. We normally recommend a penetrating oil finish such as Cutek. Although more regular maintenance re-coating may be required particularly in high exposure areas, in the long term there will be no peeling or cracking that is often an issue with acrylic or surface coatings, therefore reducing the need to sand back the boards down the track.

Re-gapping, Screw Removal or replacing boards before Deck Sanding

As part of the timber deck restoration process, certain cases may require re-gapping, replacing boards, re-countersinking of screws, or punching nails. Using the existing decking boards is normally possible, however, if they need to be re-gapped (if the existing gaps are not sufficient), or if the screws need to be removed and countersunk, then we would need to do this prior to deck sanding. Once these initial remedial works are complete, we then use a drum sander, edger, and orbital sanders to strip back the old coatings and flatten or level the deck, similarly to an interior floor. Once all of the old coatings has been removed, and the deck sanding has been completed with multiple grits to achieve a fine finish, the coat can then be applied in the same way as a new deck described above.

In addition to deck sanding and timber deck restoration, we offer the following timber restoration services

Our services also include restoring timber doors, window frames, facial, and other timber features. This process may require sanding or stripping back, and re-coating. In some cases, this can be highly detailed work and takes time and sometimes scaffolding. We use professional orbital sanders, hand tools and attention to detail to bring the timer back to a raw finish, ready for a fresh coat to be applied.
